In December 2008, Myspace attracted nearly 76 million unique visitors per month in the United States – pretty popular for a then-5-year-old. But its popularity didn’t last long. By May 2011, Myspace’s monthly unique visitors plummeted to just 34 million – less than half. Times change quickly, don’t they?
Now comes news that Facebook, the current ‘big kid’ on the block, may be experiencing some changes of its own. Though still growing on a global stage, Facebook lost 6 million users in the U.S. during the month of May. On the flip side, Twitter has actually seen a 26 percent increase in logins from last year, and LinkedIn has grown in the U.S., too.
Is it premature to think that Facebook may have the same fate as Myspace? Maybe. Though experts vary on their opinions of why this is happening, that fact of the matter is that it still is happening. As a business owner, what does that mean for you?
While the landscape is shifting, don’t go out and abandon your Facebook page. For starters, Facebook is still far and away the most used social network for people and businesses, and its platform is great for sharing a wide variety of information. But if you’ve neglected a meaningful presence in Twitter, there’s no better time to learn more about the technology and see how you can use it for gain. What do you think is next in social media?
